Aromatic, Light and Spicy!

This makes a simple yet tasty Indian Jeera rice recipe of Basmati rice, cumin seeds, and some other great ingredients. Also perfect for pairing up with a bowl of mixed dried beans, curry, or even a plain yogurt-based dish. Here is a simple recipe for you to make Jeera rice at home.

The ingredients needed:

Main Ingredients:

1 cup Basmati Rice (long grain preferred)

2 cups water (to cook the rice)

1 TBSP Ghee (or butter/oil – for a vegan option)

          1 TSP Cumin Seeds (Jeera)

Optional Ingredients for Added Flavor:

          1-small Bay Leaf

          1-inch Cinnamon Stick

          2-3 Cloves

1-small Green Chili (Slit) – Optional; Mildly Spicy

1/2 Tsp salt (adjust it according to taste preference)

1 TBSP Fresh Coriander (for garnishing)

Step by Step Procedure:

Step 1: All about Rice

Wash the basmati rice 2-3 times under running water or until the water is clear. This is done to remove the starch on the rice, making it fluffy.

Leave the rice soaked in water for 20-30 minutes. This process helps in uniform cooking and prevents the rice from stickiness.

Drain off the soaked water and keep the rice for later usage.

Step 2: Seasoned with Cumin & Spices

Heat the pan with ghee on medium heat to roast it.

After the ghee gets hot, add cumin seeds to splutter like that for a few seconds until they turn aromatic. The color of cumin seeds will become a bit darker, but they should not burn.

In case one wants richer flavour, at this stage, add bay leaf, cinnamon stick, and cloves, and stir off it for a few seconds (optional).

Chill-weathered green chile goes in for flavour and mild heat kick. Optional.

Step 3: Cook the Rice

Take a pot and add the basmati rice, the soaked and drained one. Stir everything softly in such a way that, in every grain, the cumined ghee is felt.

Sprinkle two cups of water and do not forget to add some salt. Slightly mix everything together.

Place a well-fitted cover on the casserole and let the rice to cook with low flame for about 10-12 minutes or until all the water vanish and the rice is comfortably done.

Having finished switch off the stove and let the rice remain undisturbed for 5 minutes. This standing time makes the rice look even more tastier.

Step 4: Fluff and Serve

Using a fork, gently fluff and separate the grains of rice without crushing them. Be aware that the rice is not to be chewed.

For a final touch of flavour, you can decorate with fresh coriander leaves.

Wholesome hot meal served with dal, curry, raita or any such Indian gravy of your choice!

More about Cooking Jeera Rice to Perfection:

The rice grains should be thick and aged basmati – provides superior structure and aroma.

Do Not Cook without Soaking the Rice – This method makes sure the rice’s cooked evenly and light and fluffy textured.

Use Ghee Instead of Oil – This way lends a rich flavor to the dish and its more fragrant.

Keep the pot’s heat low and cover it too – As a result this impairs one’s ability not to overcook the grains and makes them maintain their status after cooking.

Let the rice rest before serving – This helps the grains firm up and stay non-sticky.
