Plain Red Lentils Masoor Dal Recipe

Plain Red Lentils (Masoor Dal) Recipe

Masoor dal, or red lentils, is not just nutritious but also a tasty and straightforward dish to whip up. It goes perfectly with rice or roti and is a beloved staple in countless Indian homes. Let me walk you through a simple step-by-step guide to making plain masoor dal.

Key Ingredients

For Cooking Dal

·           1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)

·           3 cups water

·           ½ teaspoon turmeric powder

·           ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

For Tempering (Tadka)

·           1 tablespoon ghee or oil

·           1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)

·           1 small onion (finely chopped, optional)

·           2 cloves garlic (finely chopped or minced, optional)

·           1 small tomato (finely chopped, optional)

·           1 green chili (slit, optional)

·           ¼ teaspoon red chili powder (optional, for extra spice)

·           ¼ teaspoon hing (asafoetida, optional)

·           5-6 curry leaves (optional, for South Indian flavor)

·           1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves (for garnish)

·           1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, for tanginess)

Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions

Step 1: Wash and Soak the Lentils

·          Grab a bowl and toss in 1 cup of red lentils (masoor dal).

·          Rinse those lentils 2-3 times under running water until the water runs clear.

·          Soaking is optional, but if you’ve got a little time to spare, let them soak for 15-20 minutes. This can help cut down on cooking time!

Step 2: Cook the Lentils

Using a Pressure Cooker:

·          In your pressure cooker, combine the washed lentils with 3 cups of water.

·          Sprinkle in ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder and ½ teaspoon of salt.

·          Secure the lid and cook on medium heat for about 2-3 whistles.

·          Once the pressure has released naturally, open the lid and give the dal a gentle mash with a spoon for that creamy texture.

Using a Pot/Pan:

·          In a deep pan, add the washed lentils along with 3.5 cups of water.

·          Mix in the turmeric powder and salt.

·          Let it simmer on medium heat for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

·          If it looks a bit dry, feel free to add more water until the dal is nice and soft.

Step 3: Get the Tempering (Tadka) Ready

·          Start by heating 1 tablespoon of ghee or oil in a small pan.

·          Toss in 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and let them pop and sizzle.

·          Next, add a pinch of hing (asafoetida), some chopped garlic, and a green chili. Sauté everything for about 30 seconds until it smells amazing.

·          If you’re using them, throw in some chopped onions and cook until they turn a lovely golden brown.

·          Add in the chopped tomatoes and let them soften up (this step is optional).

·          Sprinkle in some red chili powder and give it a good mix.

Step 4: Combine the Tempering with the Dal

·          Pour your fragrant tempering into the cooked dal and stir it all together.

·          If your dal seems a bit too thick, just add a splash of hot water to get the consistency just right.

·          Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes so all those flavors can meld beautifully.

Step 5: The Finishing Touches & Serving

·          Garnish with fresh coriander leaves for a pop of color.

·          For an extra zing, squeeze some lemon juice on top (this is optional, but highly recommended!).

·          Serve it hot alongside some steamed rice, roti, or paratha for a delicious meal.

Here are some tips to elevate the flavor of your dishes:

ü  For an extra kick, sprinkle in a pinch of garam masala right at the end.

ü  If you enjoy a bit of heat, feel free to amp up the green chilies or red chili powder.

ü  Swapping out oil for ghee really boosts the taste and aroma.

ü  Want your dal to be thicker? Just cut back on the water while cooking.

Serving Suggestions:

·          Enjoy it with fluffy steamed basmati rice and a side of tangy pickle or crispy papad.

·          For a well-rounded meal, pair it with warm roti or naan.

·          Top it off with a generous dollop of ghee for an even richer flavor.
